Welcome

Thank you for your interest in contributing to The Grieviary, a space dedicated to exploring the multifaceted experience of grief through philosophical inquiry, critical analysis, and thoughtful observation. We deeply appreciate your desire to share your unique perspectives on this fundamental aspect of the human condition.

What The Grieviary Is About:

As you know, The Grieviary is not a site offering prescriptive advice or aiming for stylistic uniformity. Instead, we delve into the paths of grief, seeking varied and nuanced understandings of its complexities. We embrace paradox, uncertainty, and the often-contradictory nature of loss. Our authors explore grief through the lenses of philosophy, language, and personal reflection, resisting simplistic narratives and inviting readers to sit with the ambiguities inherent in the grieving process.

What We’re Looking For in Guest Contributions:

We welcome submissions that align with the spirit and aims of The Grieviary. This includes pieces that:

  • Engage with Grief Philosophically: Explore grief through philosophical concepts, theories, or thinkers. Consider how different schools of thought might illuminate aspects of loss.
  • Offer Critical Analysis of Grief: Examine societal, cultural, or psychological constructs related to grief. Challenge conventional wisdom or offer fresh perspectives on established ideas.
  • Share Thoughtful Observations of Human Experience: Provide insightful reflections on personal experiences of grief or the grief of others, moving beyond simple narration to offer deeper understanding.
  • Explore the Language of Grief: Analyze how language shapes our understanding and expression of grief. Consider the limitations and possibilities of articulating loss.
  • Embrace Paradox and Ambiguity: Grapple with the inherent contradictions and uncertainties within the grieving process. Resist the urge to provide neat resolutions.
  • Offer Unique Perspectives: Share viewpoints that might not be commonly represented in discussions about grief.
  • Are Written with Clarity and Depth: While stylistic consistency isn’t a primary goal, we value writing that is clear, well-reasoned, and demonstrates a thoughtful engagement with the subject matter.

What We Generally Don’t Publish:

To ensure alignment with the site’s focus, we generally do not publish:

  • Prescriptive “How-To” Guides: Articles offering advice or steps on how to manage or overcome grief.
  • Simple Narratives of Loss Without Deeper Reflection: While personal experiences can be valuable, they should be accompanied by philosophical, analytical, or linguistic exploration.
  • Content Focused Primarily on Emotional Support or Comfort: While empathy is important, our focus is on understanding rather than direct support.
  • Pieces Aiming for Broad Relatability at the Expense of Nuance: We value specificity and the exploration of complex emotions, even if they are not universally experienced.
  • Content That Offers Easy Answers or Tidy Resolutions to Grief.

Submission Guidelines:

If you believe your work aligns with The Grieviary’s mission, please consider the following guidelines:

  • Originality: Submissions must be original and not previously published elsewhere (including personal blogs).
  • Word Count: While we don’t have strict limits, we suggest aiming for pieces between 800 and 2000 words.
  • Formatting: Please submit your work in a clear and readable format (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word). Use headings and subheadings to organize your thoughts.
  • Author Bio: Please include a brief author bio (2-3 sentences) that you would like to appear with your piece. You may also include a link to your website or social media profile.
  • Submission Process: Please email your submission as an attachment to thegrieviary@pm.me. In the subject line, please include “Guest Submission: [Your Title]”.
  • Review Process: Our editorial team will carefully review all submissions. Due to the volume of submissions, this process may take several weeks. We appreciate your patience.
  • Editing: We reserve the right to edit submissions for clarity, grammar, and style to ensure they align with the overall tone and quality of The Grieviary. We will communicate any significant edits with you.
  • Compensation: At this time, The Grieviary is a labor of passion, and we are unable to offer monetary compensation for guest contributions. We can, however, offer exposure to our readership and the opportunity to share your thoughtful insights on grief.

We are excited to read your unique perspectives and potentially share them with The Grieviary community. Thank you for considering contributing to our exploration of grief.

Yours in grief,
